City Bans Fireworks for Being ‘Too Loud, Too Sudden, and Too Patriotic’

Sparklers now require a permit and a trigger warning.

In the name of community wellness, city officials voted this week to ban traditional fireworks, citing concerns that they are too loud, too unexpected, and excessively patriotic.

According to the new ordinance, fireworks may cause emotional distress in residents who are unprepared for celebration.

“Joy should never be abrupt,” one council member explained. “And national pride should always be subtle.”

Under the revised guidelines, all remaining sparkler use will require a permit, a safety briefing, and a short acknowledgment of the city’s complicated relationship with celebration.

Organized celebrations will now feature approved alternatives such as:

  • Quiet light projections
  • Interpretive smoke displays
  • And community reflection circles

The city also announced that future Independence Day events will be rebranded as “Interdependence Evenings.” Attendees are asked to clap softly and avoid standing ovations.

Longtime residents expressed confusion. “We used to light fireworks to celebrate freedom,” one man said. “Now we fill out forms.”

Officials reassured citizens that the new approach is safer, calmer, and far less likely to inspire enthusiasm.
