Local Man Stands for National Anthem; Community Demands Immediate Sensitivity Training
In an incident that experts are already calling “the most offensive act of patriotism this week,” a local man caused widespread emotional distress Monday evening by… standing for the National Anthem.
The man, 47-year-old construction supervisor Bill Harper, reportedly rose from his stadium seat the moment the first note played, placing his hand over his heart “like a normal American,” witnesses said—triggering what city officials later described as “a cascading wave of unapproved nationalism.”
Several bystanders gasped. One fainted. Another immediately began live-tweeting the event, accusing Harper of “performing outdated gestures that center the flag and marginalize modern feelings.”
Security quickly surrounded the man, not to detain him, but to escort him to a “Reflection Zone”—a small, roped-off area featuring a beanbag chair and a laminated infographic titled Why Patriotism Hurts People.
“We simply can’t allow this kind of traditional behavior in public spaces,” said Community Sensitivity Director, Rainbow T. Skywhisper. “When people stand for the anthem, it sends a harmful message that America might be worth appreciating. That’s extremely destabilizing for certain community identities.”
Harper, meanwhile, seemed confused by the uproar. “I’ve been standing for the anthem since I was a kid,” he said. “It’s just respect.” The comment has since been flagged by local authorities as “potentially extremist nostalgia.”
In response to the incident, the City Council has ordered Harper to attend a mandatory Eight-Week Sensitivity Adjustment Program, where he will learn approved alternatives to standing—such as kneeling, sitting crisscross-applesauce, or staring blankly at the ground while humming non-patriotic melodies.
Organizers of the event released a statement emphasizing that they support “all forms of free expression,” but added that “expressions involving love of country must be handled responsibly and with appropriate supervision.”
Harper, for his part, says he’ll complete the training, but insists he’s not ashamed.
“I love this country,” he said. “Pretty sure that used to be okay.”
Officials have since confirmed that the program may be extended if Harper continues showing signs of “unsanctioned gratitude toward America.”
Because someone has to say it…
