Library Rebrands Books as ‘Paper Opinions’ — Reading Without Guidance Now Discouraged
In an effort to protect citizens from the dangers of independent thought, the Metro City Public Library announced it has officially rebranded books as “Paper Opinions,” warning patrons that reading without proper guidance may lead to unregulated ideas.
“Books contain viewpoints,” explained Library Inclusion Officer Nova Brightleaf. “And viewpoints can conflict. Conflict leads to thinking. Thinking leads to conclusions. And conclusions are incredibly unsafe.”
Under the new policy, patrons are no longer allowed to browse shelves freely. Instead, visitors must request books through a Certified Interpretation Guide, who will explain what the author meant before the reader is allowed to turn a page.
The library has also introduced Trigger Tabs, brightly colored inserts warning readers about potentially harmful content, including:
- Plot
- Character development
- Moral lessons
- Historical facts
- Endings that suggest right and wrong
Classic novels have been relocated to a restricted section labeled “Legacy Content: Read at Your Own Emotional Risk.”
One librarian defended the change.
“Previously, people could just read a book and decide what they thought,” she said. “That was chaotic. Now we provide approved summaries so no one accidentally forms an opinion.”
Children’s sections have been updated as well. Fairy tales are now accompanied by disclaimers clarifying that:
- Dragons are not evil
- Heroes should avoid leadership roles
- Villains may simply be misunderstood
- Happy endings are optional and emotionally exclusionary
Some patrons were disappointed.
“I used to come here to read,” said longtime visitor Alan Brooks. “Now I need a permission slip and a feelings consultant.”
Library officials remain confident.
“Our mission is no longer literacy,” Brightleaf said. “It’s emotional safety through curated interpretation.”
As of press time, the library was considering removing books entirely and replacing them with guided storytelling circles, where stories change based on how everyone feels about the ending.
As always…Because someone has to say it.
