School Cafeteria Eliminates Lunch Menu — Students Choose Meals Based on Identity

In an effort to make lunchtime more inclusive, the Brookside Unified School District announced it has officially eliminated cafeteria menus, allowing students to choose meals based entirely on identity, lived experience, and emotional alignment.

“We realized menus were limiting,” said Nutrition Equity Coordinator Sage Greenfield. “They force students to choose between predefined options, which can be deeply invalidating.”

Under the new system, food is no longer categorized by ingredients, calories, or taste. Instead, students select meals using descriptors such as:

  • “Comforting”
  • “Affirming”
  • “Heritage-adjacent”
  • “Exploratory”
  • “Emotionally safe”

Pizza, once a cafeteria staple, is now listed as “culturally conditional.” Students must complete a brief reflection worksheet before consuming it, explaining their personal relationship with cheese and whether tomato sauce aligns with their truth.

Milk has been reclassified as “historically complex,” while chicken nuggets are only available to students who can demonstrate “intentional awareness of nugget origins.”

Lunchroom staff have been retrained as Food Facilitators, tasked with guiding students through identity-based meal journeys.

“When a child asks for a sandwich, we don’t just hand it to them,” explained one facilitator. “We ask who they are today, and whether bread supports that identity.”

Parents expressed concern.

“My kid just wants to eat,” said one father. “Yesterday he missed lunch because he couldn’t articulate his relationship with starch.”

School officials insist the system works.

“Students are learning valuable skills,” Greenfield said. “Like self-expression, patience, and how to survive hunger while reflecting.”

As of press time, the district confirmed it is considering replacing food altogether with nutritional affirmations, allowing students to feel full without the burden of eating.

As always…Because someone has to say it.
